Recently, it was said that children going back to school were at a significantly lower risk of both catching and transmitting the Coronavirus between themselves and staff. However, in recent news, a new UK-wide study shone new light on the common symptoms and the prevalence of Coronavirus in Children.
More than 1,000 children took part in the study, including 182 children from Noah’s ark Children’s hospital for Wales in Cardiff and found that gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting and diarrhoea) are the common COVID-19 symptoms before a persistent cough and changes to their taste and smell. And this isn’t limited to children under the age of 10. Older children in secondary schools are also likely to develop these symptoms before a persistent cough and loss of smell and taste.
So, what does this mean for schools?
For schools this can be difficult. Norovirus is a virus that causes gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting and diarrhoea) and is commonly found in school environments (in November a large outbreak was seen in schools in the north of England). Now with these new symptoms, Coronavirus can be easily mistaken for Norovirus.
So, what should schools do if a pupil displays these new symptoms?
If a pupil does show symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, persistent cough or a loss of taste and smell, they should be placed in a room where they a separated from others until their parent or guardian are able to collect them. You can see the guidelines here
To avoid further spread and infection of the Coronavirus, have your cleaning teams thoroughly clean areas and surfaces that the pupil has been in contact with, with viricidal cleaning products. To provide extra protection against the Coronavirus, have your school bio-misted. This allows all surfaces within an area to be disinfected simultaneously – killing 99.9999% of viruses including Coronavirus.
Due to our proactive nature, we already have cleaning methods that align perfectly with current infection control protocols. We proactively us virucidal products that are industry approved and are proven to kill 99.99% of viruses including the Coronavirus and Norovirus. Alongside our products, we train our cleaning teams to use our colour-coded cloths and equipment to avoid cross-contamination of surfaces and further spread of viruses. And as part of our normal cleaning regimes, we regularly clean hotspot areas such as light switches, handrails, door handles/buttons, toilet leavers, etc.
