Schools out for summer! But not COVID-19

    Is your school ready?

We all heard about schools becoming hubs and welcoming key year groups back in June to continue their key stages of education and minimise the risk of COVID-19 spreading and infecting. As the situation surrounding the pandemic has improved (in-terms of the decreased number of cases) The Welsh Government, local authorities and schools will be looking to see the return of all pupils in the autumn term in September.

However, compared to having small numbers of pupils in school during June, seeing the full return of pupils in September requires much planning and increased implementation of procedures – especially when it comes to cleaning and sanitising.

So, before pupils return to school for the Autumn term, what should schools do to ensure that they are safe and clean enough?

To help answer that question we have some helpful tips and advice that will help get schools clean, safe, and ready.

    Risk assessments

Although schools were open to pupils in June, they only welcomed limited numbers of pupils to limit the spread of COVID-19 when it was at its peak. With statistics surrounding the Coronavirus now showing improvement, schools will be seeing all their pupils back and with that comes increased risks.

So before you welcome your pupils back, it is a legal requirement for you to revisit and update your risk assessment – considering additional risks and actions that need to be taken to ensure the safety of your pupils and the minimised risk of COVID-19 spreading. For example: What are your cleaning procedures for when a pupil is confirmed to have COVID-19?

    Increased cleaning schedules

After conducting a thorough risk assessment and considering the additional risks surrounding the return of all pupils, you would have implemented strict procedures including increased cleaning schedules.

Whether your school has it’s own cleaning team or has an outsourced team, it’s important that their normal cleaning schedules increase to ensure that shared spaces that are used by different groups (classrooms, dining halls, toilets) and high touch areas (light switches, computer equipment, handrails, door handles/buttons) are thoroughly and regularly cleaned and sanitised with virucidal products and colour coded cloths and equipment – minimising the risk of cross-contamination and infection.

However, if you are looking for more protection against COVID-19 for your school then it’ll be worth investing in our Bio-misting services. Our bio-misting services allow us to spray a fine mist of virucidal disinfectant across a room or large space – disinfecting multiple surfaces at one time (including hard to reach places such as high ceilings, ledges and walls). Once our disinfectant settles and dries after a few minutes, it gets to work killing 99.9999% of viruses including COVID-19 and other infectious viral infections. And it perfectly works between your normal cleaning regimes as it remains active for several days – reacting to any moisture (even on the microscopic level) that contains bacteria and viruses.

    Good hand hygiene

Viruses such as COVID-19 can be easily transmitted by our hands by touching surfaces that are often touched by others (handrails, door handles/buttons, light switches, computer equipment). And with this knowledge there is a strong emphasis on pupils to maintain good hand hygiene to minimise the spread of the virus.

If pupils are using the toilet or are about to eat/have eaten, remind them to thoroughly wash their hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap. To ensure that pupils maintain good hand hygiene throughout the day, place hand sanitisers outside subject blocks, classrooms and dining halls.

Right now, the safety of pupils returning to school is on everyone’s priority list, including ours. We understand the importance of providing a safe and clean learning environment and already implement cleaning procedures such as the regular use of virucidal cleaning products, colour coded cloths and equipment, and the cleaning of hotspot areas.
