Are your cleaners trained?

Cleaners will face different hazards and risks all the time when cleaning a property. From repetitive strains and skin irritations from chemicals to falls, trips and slips.

Whenever cleaning, cleaners should have a good understanding of Health and Safety but also COSHH, making sure that they are able to identify any potential hazards and risks to themselves and for people around them and use PPE (personal protective equipment) correctly.

So when cleaning, what should your cleaners do to make their environment safe?

Make others aware that your cleaners are cleaning

When cleaning, it is important to make staff and visitors aware that your cleaning staff are cleaning. This is important to avoid any accidents such as slips, falls and trips. For example, ensure the cleaning sign is on a dry area so people can see it before approaching the area that your cleaners are cleaning.

Use Correct Equipment

When using cleaning products that can cause irritations, make sure that your cleaning staff are wearing gloves. Using different cloths, mops and buckets should be used to avoid cross contamination in different areas.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is important to protect your cleaners from harmful substances or accidents. When using harmful chemicals your cleaners should wear protective gloves and when mopping, waterproof and slip resistant footwear should be worn.

Following correct procedures

When cleaning it is important that your cleaning staff follow correct procedures to avoid accidents such as spillages. After using cleaning products/ chemicals make sure that the caps are securely screwed closed and when using read the instruction label on the back.

Training and supervision

Whenever you employ new cleaning staff, it is important that they are trained correctly in COSHH and Health and Safety. When training, instil safe work practices and procedures to create a safe working environment.
